Beyond the popular islands lie secret spots that only locals know. Discover secluded bays, forgotten islands, and the archipelago's best-kept secrets accessible by private boat.

Every visitor to Stockholm's archipelago knows Sandhamn and Vaxholm. But the true magic of these 30,000 islands lies in the places most people never find. As charter captains who've spent decades in these waters, we're sharing our favourite hidden gems.
Why Go Off the Beaten Path?
The popular islands are popular for good reason — but they can feel crowded in peak summer. A private boat charter gives you the freedom to explore beyond the obvious destinations and discover the archipelago's authentic soul.
Secret Islands and Anchorages
Rödlöga – The Red Island
Rödlöga sits in the outer archipelago, far enough from Stockholm that day-trippers rarely make it this far. The island gets its name from the distinctive red rock formations along its eastern shore.
What makes it special:
- Tiny year-round community of ~30 residents
- Exceptional swimming from flat rock shelves
- Fresh fish available from local fishermen
- Complete absence of commercial tourism
- Best reached by motorboat for a full-day adventure
Bullerö – August Strindberg's Retreat
The famous Swedish playwright retreated to Bullerö for inspiration, and it's easy to see why. Now a nature reserve managed by the Archipelago Foundation, Bullerö offers pristine nature and literary history.
Visitor tips:
- Anchor in the protected western bay
- Walk the marked trail to Strindberg's favourite viewpoint
- Bring binoculars — the birdlife is exceptional
- Landing permitted, but overnight camping is restricted
Gällnö – The Forgotten Middle Island
While nearby Grinda attracts crowds, Gällnö remains quietly beautiful. The island offers excellent hiking through diverse landscapes — from meadows to deep forest to dramatic clifftops.
Highlights:
- Gällnö Krog serves farm-to-table lunch in summer
- Ancient oak forests with trees over 300 years old
- Protected harbour on the southern side
- Excellent mushroom foraging in September
Ingmarsö – Authentic Island Life
Ingmarsö offers a genuine glimpse into year-round archipelago living. With a small school, community centre, and local farm, this island hasn't been packaged for tourists.
Worth visiting for:
- Ingmarsö Hembygdsgård (heritage farmstead)
- Swimming at the sandy bay on the northwest coast
- Fresh eggs and vegetables from the island farm
- Walking paths that reveal the island's agricultural history
Secret Swimming Spots
Lilla Nassa
A tiny islet between Sandhamn and Möja, Lilla Nassa features flat, sun-warmed rocks perfect for swimming and sunbathing. No facilities — just pure nature. Anchor your yacht in the sheltered channel and swim ashore.
Björkskär
Deep in the outer archipelago, Björkskär offers crystal-clear water and dramatic underwater rock formations. The snorkelling here rivals the Mediterranean on a warm summer day.
Korsö Southern Point
Just around the corner from busy Sandhamn, the southern tip of Korsö island offers secluded swimming with views over the open Baltic. Most Sandhamn visitors never venture this far.
Hidden Dining Experiences
Wikströms Fisk, Möja
A fish smokery that's been operating for generations. Buy freshly smoked fish directly and enjoy it on the rocks with a view. No restaurant pretension — just perfect food in a perfect setting.
Utö Värdshus Garden
While Utö itself is known, the Värdshus garden at sunset is an underrated experience. Book a sunset cruise timed to arrive for the golden hour.
Blidö Marholmen
A countryside restaurant accessible by a short walk from the Blidö guest harbour. Seasonal menu using ingredients from the surrounding farms and forests.

Tips for Responsible Exploration
These places remain hidden gems because visitors respect them:
- Take all rubbish with you — leave no trace
- Anchor on sand or rock, not seagrass beds
- Keep noise levels down, especially in the evening
- Respect private property boundaries (Allemansrätten has limits)
- Don't reveal exact GPS coordinates of the most sensitive spots
The archipelago rewards curiosity. With a knowledgeable captain and the right vessel, every voyage can reveal something new. Contact us to plan a hidden gems charter tailored to your interests.
