Möja, also called Stora Möja, is an island in Värmdö municipality in the outer part of the central Stockholm archipelago, and the main island of the group known as the Möja archipelago. To the south lies Södermöja, separated from Möja by the sound Möja ström. Swedish Wikipedia, citing official statistics, gives an area of 12.85 square kilometres and 203 permanent residents in 2020. Visit Möja says the population increases tenfold in the short high season in July. Most people live in the villages of Långvik, Ramsmora, Norrsundshage, Löka, Berg and Hamn. The island appears as Myghi in King Valdemar's sailing itinerary from the 1200s, and a land register from 1543 lists eleven farms in Berg, Löka, Ramsmora, Långvik and on Södermöja. Fishing was the basis of life for centuries. From around 1900 and into the 1970s, strawberry growing was an important trade on the islands east of Möja and north of Långvik. Möja got a regular steamboat connection in 1906 and has been one of the archipelago's most popular summer islands ever since. Much of the island group east of Möja belongs to the Storö-Bockö-Lökaö nature reserve, often called Möjareservatet. The main harbour, with a fuel station, restaurants and grocery shops, is in Berg in the south, where Waxholmsbolaget's boats call. There are steamboat jetties at Ramsmora, Löka, Berg, Långvik, Möjaström and Södermöja, and guest harbours in Kyrkviken south of Berg, at Löka, in Ramsmora and in Långvik. There is no car ferry; local traffic on the roads is mostly ATVs and flatbed mopeds. In Berg you find Möja's local history museum, opened in 1922, and Möja church, built in 1768. The Roland Svensson Museum, dedicated to the artist who painted the Möja skerries in every season, opened in 2014 by the Ramsmora steamboat jetty. Visit Möja describes the island as about 6.5 kilometres from north to south, with country roads well suited to cycling and walking, three lakes, the Björndalen nature reserve and marked trails. The longest trail runs 12 kilometres between Hamn and Ramsmora. Evert Taube drew inspiration from Södermöja for his song "Det går en dans på Sunnanö". Båtturistguiden's distance table gives Stockholm to Möja as 29 nautical miles. Cruise time from Strandvägen is about 1h 55min at 15 knots in a motorboat and about 3h 40min at 8 knots in a yacht. These are estimated cruise times at those speeds, not a scheduled departure, and the actual time depends on traffic, speed limits and conditions on the water.
