Landsort is the southernmost outpost of the Stockholm archipelago, on the island of Öja in Nynäshamn municipality. Öja is about 4 km long and 600 meters wide, and has about 20 permanent residents. Landsort lighthouse, owned by the Swedish Maritime Administration, is one of Sweden's oldest preserved lighthouses; its stone tower dates from after 1672. The island has been a nature conservation area, Öja-Landsort naturvårdsområde, since 1985, managed by Skärgårdsstiftelsen. The bird station at Bredmar rings more than 12,000 birds a year. Around the island you find a plague cemetery, a labyrinth, a chapel from 1939, the Batteri Landsort museum and 21 sculptures. Saltboden is a shop, pub and eatery, and Svedtiljas restaurant is open year-round. There is a hostel, and a hotel in the former pilot lookout tower, and bikes, canoes, a sauna and a hot tub can be rented. The guest harbor is at Norrhamn, in the north of the island, and is normally open from midsummer week to the end of August, with electricity, modern showers, toilets, a small shop and Café Norrhamn. Drinking water is scarce on the island. The ferry M/S Stångskär runs year-round for Waxholmsbolaget from Ankarudden on Torö. From Strandvägen, the route via Dalarö, Mysingen and the fairways south past Nynäshamn is an estimated 58 nautical miles, which makes it a long day by yacht. Cruise time is 3h 50min at 15 knots in a motorboat, and 7h 15min at 8 knots in a yacht. Those are estimated cruise times at those speeds, not a scheduled departure.
