Nåttarö lies about 10 km east of Nynäshamn, between Utö and Landsort, in Haninge municipality. The island and the sea around it have been a nature reserve since 2008. Länsstyrelsen gives the reserve as 6,565 hectares, 609 of them land, and it was one of the county's first marine reserves. Skärgårdsstiftelsen, which manages the reserve, calls Nåttarö one of the archipelago's foremost bathing spots, with long sandy beaches at Stora Sand and Skarsand. The island is covered in pine forest, Bötsudden rises to 38 meters, and a stage of the Stockholm Archipelago Trail crosses the island. Nåttarö Krog is by the steamboat jetty and is open in summer, and there is a snorkel trail nearby. There are also holiday cottages, a hostel at Östermar gård, tent sites, a shop and kiosks. The guest harbor at Kvarnviken has 45 berths on a floating jetty with 230 V electricity, plus mooring buoys, and a service building with toilets, showers and a sauna. Day visitors can moor at the old steamboat jetty, where there are 16 buoys, and there are free mooring buoys in Östermarsfladen. Bikes, kayaks, rowing boats and SUP boards can be rented at the harbor office. Some islets in the reserve are closed to visitors from 1 February to 15 August to protect nesting birds. Waxholmsbolaget runs to Nåttarö from Nynäshamn. From Strandvägen, the route via Dalarö and Mysingen is an estimated 42 nautical miles.
